Board Orientation On-line Welcome

Welcome to the the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiner’s on line Board Orientation course.  The course is sponsored by the Board and the Louisiana State Medical Society Education and Research Foundation.

We thought it was very important to devise an orientation program so that we would not see so many of you come before us with various problems.  It is very disheartening when we are required to discipline physicians or even revoke or suspend a license.  With the efforts of this program, hopefully we can save many of you from that problem.

The practice of medicine in Louisiana is actually a privilege.  It has been granted to you by the legislature through the board.  It is not a divine right which comes by merely obtaining your medical degree.  You will be presented information from the board’s legal council regarding how we function in licensing and disciplining physicians and our responsibility to citizens of Louisiana and the profession as well as your responsibility to your license.

You will be presented information from various state agencies and organizations that have an impact on your practice and in turn on your license.  There will be presentations on your privilege to prescribe controlled substances to your patients from the US Drug Enforcement Administration.  The Board’s rules applicable to physicians who treat chronic pain.  We will also discuss supervising physician’s assistants, as well as, the physician’s health program.  Later, you will also view a video on sexual boundaries which as been prepared by the Maryland Board of Physicians and is shown with permission.

Review questions are found at the end of each section. There is a test at the end which must be passed to receive credit for the program. A passing grade of 80% is required.

We are confident that you will find the program informative. We would welcome your feedback relating to the format as well as content at lsbme@lsbme.la.gov
