Colleagues

Welcome to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.  As you know, Act 251 of the 2009 legislature (the Medical Psychology Practice Act) transferred regulation of medical psychology from the Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (LSBEP) to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME) effective January 1, 2010. The legislation may be found on our web site at https://a.storyblok.com/f/150540/9a62729641/act251medicalpsychologistspracticeact.pdf.

According to state law, you will be required to hold a license issued by LSBME to continue practicing medical psychology after January 1, 2010. If you hold an unrestricted certificate of prescriptive authority issued by LSBEP you are eligible for licensure by LSBME. You will no longer be required to hold a license issued by LSBEP to practice psychology but you may continue to do so if you wish.

Further information relating your licensure by LSBME may be found on our web site at /MedicalPsychologists.htm.  Please download and fill out the Waiver of Confidentiality and Contact Information Forms from the web site and send them to us as soon as possible. Once we have these forms - we will be able to obtain various documents from LSBEP and will issue you a medical psychology license effective January 1, 2010

I should add that the Medical Psychology Practice Act provides for Certificates of Advanced Practice for medical psychologists who meet certain additional criteria as set forth in the legislation. If you are qualified - please review the instructions and download the required forms which may also be found on our web site at /MedicalPsychologists.htm.  You may submit an application before the end of the year and we will issue the Certificate early next year following a review of your application and approval by the Board.

A criminal background check is required for us to issue a Certificate of Advanced practice and you will have to arrange to have this done if you do not have one on file with LSBEP.  Instructions may be found on our web site.

I would like to acknowledge the cooperation we have received from our colleagues at LSBEP in making the necessary arrangements.  We look forward to working with them closely in the future in areas where we share interests and responsibility as regulatory agencies of the state.

Please feel free to contact the Board at licensing@lsbme.la.gov or me personally at rmarier@lsbme.la.gov if you have questions or need help.

Best wishes

Robert Marier MD
